Abstract
Background and Objectives: Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) in chronic renal failure (CRF) patients has been reported with a prevalence of 20-40%. But the incidence of sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) in CRF patients is unknown. Nowadays the frequency appears to increase. The purpose of this study was to analysis the clinical feature of SSNHL in
CRF patients through many variables known as prognostic factors.

Subjects and Methods: We reviewed the medical records of 15 patients (16 ears) who were diagnosed as sudden
sensorineural hearing loss with CRF and treated in Chonbuk National University Hospital from February 1997 to May 2007, retrospectively. The recovery rate, period between the start of therapy and improvement, audiogram type, age, and the initial hearing loss were studied.

Results: 10 patients were undergoing hemodialysis and 4 patients had undergone renal transplantation. 2 patients were undergoing peritoneal dialysis. Recovery was seen in 10 of 16 cases (62.5%). Patients who had been treated within a week after symptom onset had better recovery rate than those treated after a week. Patients with mild and severe hearing loss had a better recovery rate than others. According to the duration of CRF and treatment modality, there was difference
in final result of hearing recovery. But, number of patient was so small that statistic significance was not evaluated.
Conclusions: The clinical features of SSNHL in CRF patients did not show significant difference with those of non-CRF patients.
